Chester Zoo is the largest garden zoo in the UK, covering 110 acres (50 hectares). There are over 6000 animals from 500+ species. Well over half are from rare and endangered species, with successful breeding from three quarters of these. The zoo is involved in 37 reintroduction projects alongside other leading zoos. The zoo is famous for its large enclosures with natural barriers. It regularly wins awards for its gardens, which give a 'golden frame' to the collection. Chester has the largest breeding colony of chimpanzees in the country and the largest herd of Asiatic elephants. The new Monkey Islands exhibit - opened by the HRH The Duke of York in October 1997 it is the finest in Europe. The new Twilight Zone Bat Cave is being built for 1998. The Tropical Realm has free flying birds, a new alligator pool, the reptile collection, and huge banana and palm trees. The zoo won the North West Tourist Board 'Favourite Visitor attraction of the year' in 1997. Excellent facilities for visitors with disabilities. Zoofari Overhead Railway has 1.5km of track and is open every day.
